Tutorial: No Sew Tutu
Here’s a fun easy no-sew tutorial for tutus! I think tutus are really fun and I loved them as a little girl so I hope you enjoy them too!
Materials needed:
- Fabric: 4-6 yards of tulle depending on the size – the colors are up to you and you can choose as many colors as you want. In this tutorial I chose 3 different colors and used a total of 5 yards of tulle.
- Waistband: an elastic band – the width of the elastic is up to you but here I bought a 1.5 yard ½” braided elastic
Equipment needed:
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Cutting mat
Step 1: Measure your/your child’s waistband with the elastic to determine a comfortable fit. Be sure to leave an inch or two at both ends of the elastic so you have room to create a double knot.
Step 2: Lay your fabric out so that it is completely flat.
Step 3: Roll your fabric up into a long tube shape.
Step 4: Cut the tulle into pieces about 3-4” wide. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Step 5: Repeat this process for all the different colors of tulle you have chosen for your tutu. You should end up with a pile like this.
Step 6: Unroll your tube of fabric, fold it in half and then cut!
Step 7: Now this step is optional. I like to cut the tips of the fabric so that they are pointed at the ends by folding the strip in half and snipping the off the corner. This makes the tutu look more pixie-like.
Step 8: Loop your strip of tulle over the elastic band and pull to tighten.
Step 9: Repeat this process using the different colors of tulle in an alternating pattern.
Step 10: Continue this process until you’ve just about filled up the entire elastic. As I get closer to finishing I like to double knot the ends of the elastic.
Tada!!! You’re done! 🙂
